What are weep hole ducts and where should they be placed?

What are weep hole ducts?
Weep hole ducts are water outlets.  Used in conjunction with a cavity tray they allow water to drain away from the cavity preventing it from transferring to the inner leaf and causing damp.

Where should weep hole ducts be placed?
To help get the positioning of weep hole ducts and cavity trays right, LABC Warranty has put together a handy Cavity Trays and Weep Holes Checklist.  Easy to follow, the sheet outlines the required locations of cavity trays and weep hole ducts to Building Regulations and LABC Warranty’s Technical Manual.  Download your copy of the checklist here.

What is a good weep hole duct to use?
There are several manufacturers of weep hole ducts in the UK and it is an item widely available from builders merchants and distributors nationwide.

National and independent house builders all over the UK use Rytons Rytweep in clear.  It’s easily fitted and virtually disappears once installed.  A true crystal clear, it draws in the colour of the surrounding mortar giving any colour brickwork or mortar a great finish.

Although a tapered design, the Rytweep is full brick height at the rear and complies with the latest NHBC guidance and good practice that the cavity end of a weep hole should be at least 65mm x 10mm (the size of a brick perpend).  This helps ensure the weep is kept clear from mortar droppings, allowing water to enter from the cavity tray for an effective performance.
