PREVIEW: March FOCUS ON: Rytons Rytweep® – Discover the WHAT, WHY, WHERE and WHEN

What is a Rytweep?

Rytons Rytweep® is a pre-formed cavity weep hole and the design behind two of the industry’s most popular perpend weeps. Its innovative tapered design allows it to be embedded in the mortar, blending seamlessly into the masonry, and preserving the appearance of the brickwork. We offer two types of Rytweep® to suit different building requirements: Rytons Rytweep® Clear and Rytons A1® Fire-rated Metal Rytweep®.

Why do we need weep hole ducts in cavity walls?

Weep hole ducts keep moisture in the cavity under control. A cavity wall has two layers: an inner wall and an outer wall. Without weep hole ducts, moisture entering the cavity through the outer wall (via the porosity of the bricks and cracks/gaps in the bricks/mortar), can build up and transfer to the internal wall. Excessive moisture causes dampness, structural damage and mould growth inside the property.

Where should weep holes be located?

Weepholes should be placed in several locations.

According to Part C of the Building Regulations, weepholes should be provided every 900mm on the damp-proof tray. If the tray does not run the full length of the wall (i.e. over an opening), a minimum of two weep holes should be provided.

For NHBC Standards, weep holes should be located:

  • At least two per opening (such as underfloor vents, ducts, or flues), spaced no more than 450mm apart.
  • At least one to the bottom tray in a series of stepped cavity trays, such as at pitched roof abutments.
  • On cavity trays in parapet walls or at horizontal roof abutments, spaced no more than 1m apart.
  • On cavity trays above inset gas meter boxes, at least 180mm from the edge of the box and no more than 1m apart.

Always refer to current regulations in your area.

When should you choose a plastic or metal Rytweep?

Typically, a plastic Rytweep® is suitable for houses and mid-rise properties up to 11m high. However, if the cavity wall is within 1m of the relevant boundary,  a non-combustible metal Rytweep® is required.

For high-rise buildings over 18m (11m in Scotland), a metal Rytweep® must be used. This requirement also applies to residential buildings between 11m and 18m, and those 11m or less where the cavity wall is within 1m of the relevant boundary.

Always refer to current regulations in your area.
